Where has all the simple, ordinary stuff of childhood gone? The things that were made in British factories and workshops and sold in hardware stores, that were an unremarkable but important part of everyday life and taken for granted until they disappeared. Things like wooden clothes pegs, metal buckets & spades, brown paper bags, slot headed screws, cast iron hinges and wooden cupboards; and remember pop bottles that were returned, washed and reused; what happened to them? Plastic and cheap imports from the Far East changed the world we lived in and something was lost – an integrity and quirkiness that was peculiarly British.

British Standard by Plain English is a call to arms for British manufacturing and for honest, properly made products. This collection of kitchen cupboards is made by hand in our Suffolk workshop by people who care about good design and traditional craftsmanship. Their modest appearance is matched by their modest price (around £7000 for an average-sized kitchen including worktops) because all you pay for is the joinery; there is no bespoke design, delivery or fitting service; you do that yourself. All we do is make the cupboards beautifully.
